For architecture, the result is visibly obvious; we prioritise quarterly profit (to capture 'value' and survive in this fiat environment) at the expense of enduring beauty, which takes more time, consideration and effort to create. Consider the shoddy, uninspiring landscapes that developers have thrown up for the last 40+ years, all in the name of the quick sale. And now contrast with some of the Art Deco masterpieces that we still revere decades later. Is it just coincidence that the 1920s represented the last hoorah of the gold standard, and the start of our path towards flimsy money?

Buzzin For Bitcoin

March 29, 2021

And let me tell you, there is nothing like having skin in the game. A positive feedback loop would arise. I'd read an article, strengthen my conviction, reassess our migration funds, and always find a little more fiat to ditch. Same with the books. The videos. It was a classic case of Do Your Own Research. Call Your Own Fucking Shots.

Death By Micro

March 29, 2021

At first it might not be that obvious. A query here and there, or a desire to know intimate details of your work. Healthy enough, perhaps? A desire to be on top of things, but not to be involved? Yet before you know it, there are emails flying at you from every direction.

Stay Curious

March 25, 2021

Change the source of information entering your life. Honestly, it just changes everything. You don't even have to quit social media. In fact, I've started using Twitter so much more since I started Staying Curious. You just have to treat these rich wells of content with respect. When I pick up my phone now, I'm basically learning by default. A little bit more. Every single day. That is how I built websites from scratch with zero formal education. It is what gave me courage to write these words.

Seeking Energy

March 18, 2021

Until now, I've not had the energy, and thus clarity of thought, to act out my life preferences. Well now my friends, the tide is turning. As I set out in an earlier musing, we are leaving the rolling stone life behind (for a while yet, anyway). I can feel my batteries (and my soul) charging just by being in a pleasant space, with the perfect partner, and our (admittedly crazy) puppy.

My Love Of Structure

March 16, 2021

So what do I mean by structure? At a high level, it is a commitment to regular, repeatable action. It is a map, ensuring that I am intentional with my time and energy. That's not to say I live a rigid, mechanical life. Quite the opposite! But without some form of structure, I would be an untethered yacht; floating around randomly whilst edging ever closer to the rocks.

Working From Anywhere

March 2, 2021

In our paperless age, and with most knowledge roles based from a screen, it is so god damn easy to work from anywhere. And if it is so god damn easy, then why do we continue to inhabit these stuffy depressing offices? What possible reason is there to inhabit these spaces for 8 hours of your day?

Calling Somewhere Home

March 1, 2021

I've just moved into a new house, in a beautiful suburb of central Melbourne. And what a difference. After a few years of chopping and changing, finding myself in leaky apartments and minuscule studios, the benefits are already clear. I am benefitting from a clear mind. Previously, I viewed where you live in mechanical terms; a secure space to eat, sleep and store a few possessions. That was misguided.
