Any Goal Will Do

From One World to Another

In my younger days life goals were pretty damn primitive; money, power, status. I'd envision myself in a suit, swinging my ego around in fancy city centre office. I'd be basking in the glory of a corner office and a fancy title. Seems seriously cringeworthy now, but it reflected the desire for an environment completely alien from my own. It was my rejection of shift work, housing estates and family stress.

Why suits, egos and offices specifically? Well, my friends, you take inspiration where you can get it. For me it was television and movies. Even the evening news gave a glimmer of something different. Those folks on screen looked confident and assured. They had an apparent grasp of the world that was sorely missing at home. All total bullshit, of course. But there is much power in perception.

That fired me up through school, for sure. Everything was viewed in the pursuit of money, power and status. Grades, friends, interests. It was pretty ruthless to be honest. And I would never, ever reveal how hard I was working to pass exams. In my hometown it wasn't a good look to be trying. Why waste the energy Steven? Fate had to be accepted. This pursuit steered me away from crushing apathy.

What I'm Trying to Say...

Now I won't bore you with the intricate details beyond that today. I become a bit more sophisticated as I progressed through university and my early career. You can read how the perspective shifted at length here. My point is those initial goals were bloody basic, but bloody necessary. They fired up motivation at an important stage in my life.

So don't worry too much about what you want to be or where you want to go. Just figure out what currently gets you out of bed in the morning. Desire is constant. Outcomes can chop and change. But motivation is fleeting.

Give it whatever fuel it needs.

Signing out, Steven.
